It can even go as early as board games like dungeons and dragons. Which actually gave you a playable environment for you and your freinds pretending to be knights and wizards in some mystical far off land. But when the concept finally hit the world of video games it gave a new look on role playing. Since it now left very little to the imagination and left you with many more surprises. Yes RPGs are a genre that sure has left its impact on the world of gaming. So in honer of RPGs in general I have created a list of some of the best RPGs to leave there impact on the world. #10 Super Mario RPGMaybe it was because I was short on candidates, but ether way taking the plumber we all know and love and thowing him to an RPG adventure was probably one of the best ideas since his 3rd platform installment. With the combined efferts of nintendo and squaresoft such a thing was made posssible. Its everything we loved about mario and much much more in a satisfying RPG experiance. In my opinion out of all the mario spin offs out there, this is by far one of the best. #9 Dragon Warrior 4One of last great RPGs to hit the NES as well as one of the finest titles in the dragon quest series. dragon warrior 4 as it was called for a while, introduced many new elements and features to an already familliar genre of games. Not only did it tell the story through a 5 part chapter system, but it also became the first game to imply the tactics system to the series. This allowed you to provide strategies to your party memebers while maintaining full control of your hero. Theres even several remakes that have never set foot outside of japan, what a shame considering how hard it is to find a copy of 4.As a spin of to the 1991 genesis title shining in the darkness. What shining force did that no other RPG at the time did was imply real time strategy into an RPG style system. You controlled various characters across a grid style map. Each character had a different class and set of abilities. You’d go into one on one battle with each individual character and enemy. This was a creative battle system that to this day can be found in many other games such as fire emblem and final fantasy tactics.#7 EarthboundIf there was one RPG that should go down in history for shear creativity its earthbound. Taking everything from the conventional RPG and mixing it up with modern day everything. Instead of a knight in a mystical land you were just a kid living in his home town, swords were now baseball bats, gold was now dollars, magic spells were psychic powers, and goblin, dragons, and wizards, were now stop signs, cars, flying saucers, robots, and wild animals. This in by far one of the most creative franchises nintendos ever come out with right under pokemon and legend of zelda, and is also one that needs more recognition.#6 Lunar: The Silver StarThough the sega CD was best known for its crappy FMV games, there were a few good exeptions that showed off what CD gaming could really do. lunar the silver star is a good example. With a layout similar to final fantasy, anime style cut scenes, CD quality music and sound effects, and gordius CD style graphics makes Lunar not only a pioneer in CD gaming but a memorable part of the early RPG genre.squaresoft once agains proves there the king of all RPGs by making secret of mana. What made this game so special was that it through away the turn based battle system found in most RPGs and replaced it with a hack n slash battle system. This was an exciting new twist for most RPGs at the time considering it saved room for more fast paced action. That and you could play with up to 3 other people. The Mana series would also become squaresoft’s most treasured franchises next to final fantasy.#4 Phantasy Star 2In the end choosing a phantasy star game to represent was also a challange. But in the end I think we can all agree that 2 is the peak of the series. Taking place many generations after the events of the first game, this installment inproved over the aspects that made the first phantasy star so enjoyable. As well as adding some new things. Maybe it was the Scifi style environment or The enhanced difficulty for any RPG but phantasy star is considered one of the most memorable franchises segas ever made. (AKA Final Fantasy 6)Considered by most to be the peak of the series. Final fantasy 3 helped introduce new battle styles, interchangeable characters, spells that everyone could learn, having to make quick second decisions, as well as a steampunk style environment mixed with fantasy and magic. The game itself also has a very diverse plot and a sound track like no other. Yes final fantasy 3 is almost good enough to make first place, but at least it made the top 3.Not only did it push the SNES hardware to its limit with a whomping 32 megabit cartridge. But also had a exiting time traveling story with over the hed visual effects, and what decisions you make in the past can have effects in the future events in this game. While the battle system isnt anything we havent seen before its still the game itself is still awesome experience and remains to this day a cult classic.!WARNING!(I feel I should warn you that my next choice could cause injury and death for some people. Now im not saying you have to agree with me on my number one choice but I have really good reason for choosing this next one as number one, you’ve been warned.) So for my number one choice I bring you.If theres one RPG that took the world by storm it would have to be Diablo. Though its not best remembered for its storyline it did things most other RPG didnt before. Replacing the turn based battle system with hack n slash gameplay and placing you against 50 or so enemys at once. Also when you leveled up you could actually chose what stats to level up. Plus there was the fact that the dungeons were randomised each time you started a new game making each experiance unique. Then there was the dark and creepy atmosphere that got more twisted and hellish as you worked you way down into the catacombs to diablo himself. Plus you could play by yourself or with a group of friends online, and that is enough to make diablo one of the greatest RPGs of all time.Log in to comment on or rate this article. You can even write your own! Good List. Chrono Trigger would be my number 1. Glad to see Lunar on a list. FINALLY! someone who recognizes how great Diablo is! Amazing list! Thanks for sharing! Great list. Makes me want to go out and try the games on the list that I haven’t played (most of them.) I have to say that Chrono Trigger is AMAZING!!! I played it for hours upon hours when I was a kid, and I can still play it for hours today. and as I said a million times its my list not yours, and if I want to put Diablo as number one thats no one elses decision but mine. Plus anything before the year 2000 is retro so there. I didnt own a plqaystation so I never got to play any of tose games, and I think dragon quest 1 sucks. I agree with several folks about Diablo not being ’old school’. I mean, it came out in 1997. Albeit that’s 11 years ago, that’s not really old school. You might as well put in Final Fantasy VII, Wild Arms, and Xenogears, which are great games that came out around the same time as Diablo. Personally, I would put in Dragon Warrior I(Dragon Quest) in that top 10. Oh, yeah! Curse of the Azure Bonds. Man, that was a good time! I actually got that game first and ended up hunting down Pool of Radience and Secret of the Siverblades. A buddy and I worked hard on those games. And, yes, D’oh. I did mean Lunar: The Silver Star. Ooops. Anyway, Great Games! Sounds like you didn’t get to play any PC games -- which I find on par and, in some cases, superior to many of these titles. Examples including, Wastleland, Ultima IV & V, The Bards Tale, Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc etc. Earthbound should have been scored higher...like at least number 3 Just curious, why do you feel Diablo isn’t a true rpg? Is it because it’s not turn based, because if that’s the case Zelda shouldn’t be one either. You’re ****ing kidding, right? Diablo, an old school RPG? This guy is smoking crack like crazy. Diablo is NOT a true RPG. Should’ve said Zelda Ocarina of Time or Paper Mario. Diablo? What a piss poor choice. I’d put FINAL FANTASY II (IV for purists) at #1, that was one of the move amazing games ever made IMHO Mad props on Diablo man, that game was awesome! I didn’t jump in on it until it had been out for awhile, but once I did I played it daily until Diablo II was released. After that I split my time between the two until newer computers ruined Diablo for me. Today’s computers don’t spin the Diablo cd continuously, so whenever something needs loading there is a long pause while it spins up and then everything happens very fast, which usually results in death. Also I somehow doubt it runs under Vista... But I still play Diablo II often. Diablo really isnt a true rpg. its click kill kill. no exploreing or nothing hardly. I loved Final Fantasy VI. I’m still hearing arguments of IV being better than VI, but I really can’t decide. Dragon Warrior IV was also a great gem, and the good news is that it is being remade for the DS along with Final Fantasy IV, which is coming in July two days before my birthday! diablo was a curveball. I was thinking you were going to go with something from the fallout series, due to the warning - no one would have been mad if you picked ff7. The reason I didnt include FF7 isnt because I thought it was to new. Its because I stated ONE GAME PER FRANCHISE!!!! Im only chossing what I think are the best from each franchise and to most people its 6, though 7 did look good with its 3D effects and such I never played it because I ended up getting an N64 instead of a playstation. Supafli690, to be fair this artile is titled ’OLD SCHOOL Role Playing Games,’ so it could be that FF-VII is just to new to be included on the list. Most of these games came out during the SNES/Genesis era or earlier so they would have predated FF-VII which was for the Play Station. The only game on this list that could possibly be considered a contemporary of FF VII is Lunar but I do beieve that Sega CD was around before the Play Station. At any rate Sega CD was by far inferior to the Play Station and Nintendo 64 so I really don’t consider it to be part of the same home console generation. FF7 & mario RPG were my 2 fav RPG’s. but i agree that everyone has thier own oppinions & i completely agree that you like what you like haha. Im sorry, but you put final fantasy 3 on that list! It may have been a good game, but you put ff3 on the list below diablo. Final fantasy 7 should have been at the top of the list!! How could you not even mention ff7!!?? Old School Rpg Android Download I’m not a huge rpg fan, but I thought it was a great article either way. The fact that you mentioned Earthbound is reason enough. Also ignore the whiners because it is your article and if they don’t like it they can write their own. I agree with goblyn and YoJoe83, it is YOUR list and you mentioned some great titles. More importantly, you provided some depth concerning the reasons why these games stood out, not just to you but to the genre itself. Diablo, while maybe not considered to be a ’traditional’ RPG to purists, was a remarkable game! It, along with Diablo II, is one of the few games that I can come back to and play over and over again. I can’t even fathom how many hours I logged into playing Battle.net with these games. The replayablility of these games is more than any I’ve ever encountered in the genre. Great job! Loved it great article! Good list, but you forgot 2 important games. Phantasy star 4 and Septerra core. I remember playing the Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars when I was in 5th grade. Yeah, Diablo does rule. i still play Diablo 2 all the time. I am glad you chose final fantasy VI over VII. Bet alot more people would like six the best if it was remade in 3D dude I’m sorry but screw anybody that doesn’t agree with that because in my experiences as an RPG/RTS gamer, Diablo and Diablo 2 has managed to keep me coming back for more, year after year, since the day I first played the demo CD that I got with Electronic Gaming Monthly. I was hooked. Then when I finally bought the game and put it in and the graphics were all prettyfied, that just made my addiction to the game worse. The demo excluded a lot of good content that came with the actual game so I was pretty excited. Every time I start a diablo game I am hooked for a good 6 hours before I’m satisfied...No RPG in history with the exception of two, Final Fantasy 7 and Castlevania: Symphony of a Night, has kept me coming back for more in such a way. Almost unlimited leveling, the constant look-out for better equipment which there’s always a chance you can get something marginally better. Its just a great, fun game.thumbs up Good job for a top ten list, I swear though, these top ten lists are annoying just because people act so immature about them. WHO GIVES A DAMN IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH HIS ORDER? Why would you? Its not YOUR top ten list. I mean, sure, if I wrote a top ten article and called it ’The Top Ten Games I Know You Love in the Order You Would Definately Pick With a Less Than 1% Chance of Error’ then maybe you can complain. But since its not...shut the hell up, you sound like a child. And you probably are.GRRR! Sorry, bout that, I’m sick today, but there really is no excuse for rating an article poorly because you don’t agree with the author’s viewpoint...seriously people! Personally I would have included an MMORPG in there somwhere, either Ultima Online, Everquest or WOW. Also, many would argue that FF7 was the best of the series... but it’s all a matter of opinion. It’s your list and I think you did a great job! Why did you put Mario as #10? I like Mario. Final Fantasy 3 = Real Good. You have Phantasy Star 2 but not 4 which is without question the best in the series. otherwise good pickings. i too am glad that you didn’t just pick a final fantasy game at random to put in the number one spot... great article, just long enough and good pics None of the breath of fire games either? To each their own I suppose...Chrono Trigger rocked though. Good article, Have you ever played the Ranma rpg, I would probably have that as my No. 1 or No.2. you mentioned Secret of mana, therefor you rock! cool! thanks r ther any good RPGs on WII yet? i am so glad #1 wasnt ff7, chrono trigger or ff6. yaaaaaaay! Wait a minute...I just realized there are no Zelda games anywhere on this list. How is that possible? No, No, No Knites, Lunar: The Silver Star Story was a disaster. I pray you meant Lunar: The Silver Star. I don’t know what an RPG penis is I’m not sure I want to either. I’m glad to see Sega on this list a few times because even though the Genesis was a great system, the SNES was the place to be for RPGs in the 90’s. Good list, but where is Sirtech’s ’Crusaders of the Dark Savant’???? Excellent DW Bradley adventure that combined classic RPG elements with futuristic themes. Also, got to give a nod to the original Phantasy Star. Thanks for the list....will have to try a couple of the games I have never played. Lunar: The Silver Star Story is my favorite RPG of all time! I also enjoyed Shining Force and Diablo. And, I played the updated version of Chrono Trigger for the PS just recently. I bought Chrono Cross, supposidly a sequel to Chrono Trigger and one of the few game to recieve a 10/10 score on Gamespot.com, but I found myself quite disappointed with the game’s exceptionally weak connection to the previous game. damn bloodrose, do you really need a larger rpg penis?as for the list, well who wouldn’t haven’t a different selection? if it were my list, at least one fallout, and one knights of the old republic game would have made it in. if i would have kept the phantasy star series, it most likely would have been 4.as is though, it’s a great list. i have never played any of these games. I love these top 10 lists, but Super Mario RPG really should have been higher up on the list. Still, lots of good choices. Thumbs up. Agree with you on ’Mario RPG’ and ’EarthBound’, haven’t heard of the rest though. Great Article!! ;P Also I can put Diablo in if I want because its my list not yours. I didnt make that up, secret of mana actually had a two and three player mode, but for the three player mode to work you needed an accessory called the SNES Multitap. No one ever mentions Final Fantasy IV. That always brings a gloomy cloud to my day. Best underappreciated RPG if there ever was such a catagory. The first Paper Mario is fantastic too (but thats still a few years too young for an article like this). I’ve been a HUGE RPG fan since the original Final Fantasy was released on the NES. I can’t agree with your order at all. On top of that, Dungeons and Dragons was originally a pen and paper RPG, not a board game. Board games were released later based on D&. Secret of Mana only allowed you to have 3 players in your party including you. Therefore you couldn’t have three OTHER people in addition to yourself. DIablo has no business being on ANY top 10 rpg list I’m afraid. My top three would be Dragon Warrior VII, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy VII. Great attempt though. Earthbound is one of my favorite games of all time. Super Mario RPG also ROCKS! Old School Rpg Downloads The reason for most of the list being console RPG’s is because most of the old school computer RPG’s I never heard of. My family didnt get its first computer till like 1999, and diablo was the first RPG I remember playing for it. Lunar should be numb
